It Begins…Again!!

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

This past Tuesday, me and my buddy Albert Mach II (a.k.a “V”) had our very first virtual visit for the 2008-2009 school year. I taught 2 Sports Challenge virtual visits back to back and man was my throat ripped at the end of it. Apparently me and Albert have to get into more training so we can get back to our top physical shape. I guess its back to jogging at 4 in the morning and drinking egg yolk for the both of us! I had such a great time with both classes. The first session was from Michigan and the second session was from right here in Queens.

To read about how our first session went you can click on the following link. Thank you once again to Janine Lim for her kind words about our program.

UPDATE: You can now read about how our second Sports Challenge session with Andrea Israeli’s class at I.S 145 at this link.

Welcome All Educators

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I want to take the chance to welcome everyone coming to this site via our newly launched Digital Newsletter. We are very excited about the new initiatives we have been taking to help promote our Virtual Visit programs. These new paths include our quarterly released Digital Newsletter, which offers insight into future endeavors of the Digital Learning department as well as taking the time to highlight a new educator for every release. We have also recently unveiled our Virtual Visit website that includes PDF’s of all our VV program activities, technical requirements for connection, and a comprehensible guide of how to prepare for a Virtual Visit. We look forward to an exciting school year and bringing one of our programs to your class!

Hidden Kingdoms: The World of Microbes

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

What is a microorganism? There are several different terms used to describe these organisms: microbe, germ, protist, protozoa, algae, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. A “microorganism” or “microbe” is any organism that is too small to see with a naked eye. This program introduces students to “Microspace” and allows them to begin to observe and classify its inhabitants. Student’s will learn that microorganisms are omnipresent, existing literally everywhere and have an enormous impact upon the environment and humanity. Through hands on exploration with microscopes and the New York Hall of Science’s Hidden Kingdoms microbe exhibit students can explore the world inside the microscope.

Search For Life: Beyond Earth Virtual Visit

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Extremeophiles are microorganisms that live and thrive in extreme conditions such as intense heat, arctic waters and methane lakes. These recently discovered hardy life forms might unlock the keys to imagining life on other planets. This program allows students to study Earth environments such as Atacama Desert in Chile or deep-sea smoker vents and learn about similar environments on places like Mars and the Jupiter moon, Europa. Students will learn the requirements for life, interact with the exhibits multimedia elements and extend these ideas in our post-visit project, Profile an Extremeophile!?
