Catapult Video #2
October 1, 2009In our very first installment of our Catapult series we got the opportunity to meet Alice Stevenson, Senior Manager of Public Programs & Pre-School Learning here at The New York Hall of Science. After countless weeks of hard work from our entire Exhibit staff, NYSCI staff were able to see the final product in action. Let me tell you seeing this Catapult hurl things hundreds of feet away is absolutely amazing and should be viewed in person. Luckily for everyone we have an exclusive sneek peek of our Catapult in use as well a sit-down interview with its engineer Mr. Kyle Dries.

Now, that just looks like a lot of fun. I watched the first movie and I love the quote when she said, “the science is visible”. We need more things like this for our students.
Do you have a contest or something where we can submit things that you could put on the catapult? Will this be a Virtual Visit?

Thank you Roxanne for your response. It is great for students to get the opportunity to actually see science phenomena. For safety reasons, we are limited to what we can launch but later this month we will be seeing pumpkins flying in the sky which is always fun! As for the Virtual Visit, we have been experimenting in trying to capture the catapult in action but it is too difficult to have it translate well due to the catapults tremendous size. Stay Tuned thought for future Catapult footage!

I am a late bloomer to science, so I am intrigued by how amazing science is and am always looking for interesting ways to engage students. I don’t want them leaving school with the idea that science is making little index cards with vocabulary words on them!
Flying pumpkins! Please say you are going to shoot video of that!
Staying tuned!

Roxanne, Thank you for your responses and, it is very important to show students the fun aspect of science which there is a lot of! We will not launch any pumpkins without getting it on film so there will definitely be a video coming soon on that!
